Did you bring your puppy home last week? If they are 9 weeks old now, you might notice they are getting a little more brave. They are starting to explore their new world. This is super exciting, but it also means they can get into mischief much faster!

To help you out, here is a simple, stress-free training schedule for your 9-week-old puppy. It is packed with fun games that will make your puppy love learning.

🐾 Quick Guide

  • Keep your puppy closely supervised.
  • Make their name a positive word.
  • Use treats to make learning fun.
  • Help your puppy feel comfortable with collar handling.
  • Introduce the leash slowly and gently.
01

Be an "Eagle Eye" (100% Supervision)

Your puppy is getting very curious about their space. To keep them safe and avoid accidents, you need to watch them every single second they are out of their crate.

Use Baby Gates: Block off doors so your puppy cannot sneak into other rooms to pee on the carpet.
The House Line: Let your puppy drag a light leash with the handle cut off (so it does not get caught on things). If they try to chew on a shoe or run behind the couch, gently step on the line to stop them. It is much better than chasing them!

Invite the Family to the "Name Game"

Your puppy's name is a magic word, and they need to love hearing it.

How to play: Say your puppy's name. The second they look at you, say "Yes!" in a happy voice and give them a treat.
Get everyone involved: Let your family members play this game too! This teaches your puppy to listen to everyone in the house, not just you.
No yelling: Never use their name when you are angry or when you are not giving a treat. If you do, the name will lose its value and they will stop listening.

Try "Fancy Food Luring"

Last week, your puppy learned to follow a piece of food in your hand. Now, let us make it a tiny bit harder and a lot more fun!

The Spin: Hold a treat at your puppy's nose and guide them to spin around in a circle.
Through the Legs: Lure them to walk right between your legs.
Keep it Easy: Do not make the tricks too hard. We want your puppy to win easily so they stay happy and excited to work with you!

Practice the "Collar Touch"

Many dogs get scared and run away when people reach out to grab their collar. You can easily teach your puppy to love being grabbed!

How to do it: When you offer your puppy a treat, gently hold their collar with your other hand at the exact same time.
Happy association: This teaches your puppy that whenever hands get close to their collar, awesome treats appear! They will feel super relaxed and confident when you need to hook on their leash or pick them up.

Introduce the Leash

Your puppy is already great at wearing a collar and dragging a house line. Now, you can start holding the leash!

Get comfortable: Gently hold the end of the leash while your puppy walks around the room.
Keep it loose: Do not pull on the leash yet. Just let them get used to the feeling of you holding the other end while they explore.
