Your puppy is 10 weeks old now! They are growing so fast, and their brain is ready for some real learning. This week, we are moving past just bonding and starting to teach some actual skills.

Here is a simple, pointwise guide to help you build the perfect training routine for your 10-week-old pup.

🐾 Quick Guide

  • Teach basic commands with a simple reward formula.
  • Practice gentle handling for future vet visits.
  • Make the Name Game harder by adding distractions.
  • Redirect puppy biting toward appropriate toys.
  • Keep using the house line for safe indoor control.

The Magic 3-Step Formula

Now is the perfect time to teach basic commands like "Sit" or "Down." To do this, we use a magic three-step formula:

Step 1: The Command. Say the word "Sit" clearly.
Step 2: The Lure. Show them a piece of food and guide their nose up and back so their bottom hits the floor.
Step 3: The Reward. Give them the treat and say "Yes!"
Pro Tip: Never hold the food on their nose while saying the command. Say the word first, wait one second, and then show them the food!

Practice "Doctor Visits" (Handling)

Puppies need to be okay with being touched. This makes vet visits stress-free!

The Chin Brace: Gently hold your hand under their chin to keep their head still.
The Tooth Check: Gently lift up their lips to look at their teeth.
The Paw Massage: Touch their paws, spread their toes, and wiggle their nails.
Always say "Yes" and give a treat when they stay calm and still.

Level Up the Name Game

Your puppy probably knows their name, but can they listen when there are distractions?

Let your puppy get slightly distracted by a toy or a sniff on the floor.
Say their name clearly once.
Use a piece of yummy food (like a bit of chicken) to lure them right up to your legs.
When they look at you, say "Yes" and reward them!

Stop the Sharp Needle Teeth!

At 10 weeks, puppies love to nip and bite. It is totally normal, but we must set rules now.

Set the rule: Never let them bite your clothes, hands, or feet.
Redirect: If they try to bite you, redirect them to a long tug toy.

Keep games interactive. Playing with you should be the most exciting thing in the world!

Keep the "House Line" On

Do not take your puppy's leash off inside the house just yet.

Keep a light leash (with the handle cut off) on them whenever they are out of the crate.
It helps you stop them if they try to chew on furniture, jump up, or sneak away to have an accident.
It keeps them safe and gives you easy control without chasing them.

Keep Training Fun 🐾

At 10 weeks, your puppy is ready to learn more, but short and positive sessions are still the key. Keep rewarding good behavior and make every lesson feel like a fun game.
